I have some questions about connecting things to other things and I feel that maybe the nerd populace of livejournal could lend me a hand here!

QUESTION #1: I would like to connect my laptop to my stereo, so I can play music RILLY LOUDLY. how would I do this? what kind of cable would I need? WHAT HOLE DO I STICK IT IN? also, alternately, I would like to connect my ipod to my stereo but I don't even know if that is possible. is it?

QUESTION #2: I want to connect my laptop to my TV! if it makes a difference, I have an asus g1 and uh, like, some sort of japanese flat screen TV. again: what cable? what hole? how do I shot web?

I realize I could probably find these answers after expending minimal effort using google but I am extraordinarily lazy! as well as completely technologically disinclined!

ipod to stereo is probably easiest - you can buy this thing like a casette tape but theres a cord running from it that plugs into your ipod speaker thing... et voila

AV cables to connect laptop to a tv, if your laptop has those types of cables, which most dont. and an AUX cable to connect your ipod to your stereo, if your stereo has an AUX outlet.

i'm usually very tech savvy, but in this case, i cannot help you out. although i would suggest trying one of those old school cassette tape thingys for your car that plugs into the ipod for your stereo. but if your stereo is NEW and FANCY and doesn't have a cassette place, then that won't work. my stereo is ONLY cassettes and radio. because i am olde school.

I'd think there's a cord like you use for headphones that you could plug in to your iPod?

I AM TOTALLY ON FOR NEW YEARS FUCK YEAH. I'll be free anytime after early eveninz (like 5pm), if that makes a difference in which train you take!

also, there are like 4 liquor store like 10 minutes from my apartment because god wants me to be an alcoholic. I decided I am gonna be trashy like a grizzled old prostitute and drink tequila on new years. OLE.

NO BE AVAILABLE EARLIER!

I think Jeff gets out around noonish cuz he has a half day. I mean, really, he can only spend so much time in Gamestop before he gets bored. Perhaps we can catch a movie or something to kill time.

Well, booze is way cheaper in NH....like I can get a handle of rum for $12 while its like $22 in MA lolz.

I still don't know if we will go out or stay in, but I don't care either way!

There will be Wangs tho, lots of them, in your mouth.

If your stereo and tv have audio inputs (your tv will, but they are red and white and look like RCA plugs), you can use a 3.5mm headphone to audio left/right. radioshack for like 6 bucks. will work for sound for the laptop AND ipod. if you buy a white "made for ipod" cable, expect to pay 20 but it's a ripoff. seriously, radioshack.

if your audio input on the stereo looks like a headphone (it'll say AUX or something), then you jsut need a 3.5 mil headphone to 3.5mil headphone. or maybe 3.5 to 1/4 in.

as far as video goes, depends on the video out you have. if it's s-video, you might be able to hook it straight into the tv with an s-video cable. if it's vga (two screws on either side and some pins), you might need a vga to video adapter, which may lead out to s-video or rca.

So for the laptop, more than likely you'll need two cables and possibly a dongle. those adapters are really called dongles, hahaha.

also, i'm tkaing into account that your tv has composite video in. If it's an hdtv, it might not, but more than likely will have both of those options as well as hdmi. composite is your traditional red/white/yellow and component is hi-def: red/blue/green/white/yellow.

OKAY SO the laptop to TV shit sounds retardedly complicated so I am just going to not even bother with that because my brain cannot even deal with it.

HOWEVER my stereo has the little red/white plugs and it says AUX on it, so would this type of cable be acceptable for ipod -> stereo?

Yes on the audio cable! That will work for the laptop sound as well!

Looking at your laptop, you have a DVI. If your TV has HDMI, cop this:
http://www.amazon.com/Dvi-HDmi-Cable-6FT-M-m/dp/B0002CZHN6

Then you use the audio in conjunction with the DVI and there's video and sound! So you can watch movies or use it as an extension of your screen or play video games extra large. Add a wireless mouse and keyboard and you've kindof got a desktop setup!

Whoa just found this if you don't have HDMI:
http://www.amazon.com/DVI-I-RCA-Component-Cable-6ft/dp/B000Q6RL9Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230508822&sr=1-1

So between the 5 inputs for a device these are video and the others are audio. Either way, having DVI and hooking u to an HDMI is really nice because you're not having to convert analog to digital, you can get better quality video from the comp to the TV.

also I am assuming the cheapness of the cable won't really affect the sound quality, y/n?

cheap cable is as good as expensive cable for short distances.

the longer the cable it is, the more you will notice the quality decreasing on cheap cable. this is especially true for video.

I think you can connect an ipod to pretty much anything with a male to male auxiliary cable. Which can be purchased at Target.
At least, that's how I use my ipod in my car. Haha.
Good luck!
